One way of decoding Bazi is to look at the overall "setup" of the 8 characters.
As part of Bazi learning, one will definitely recognize of using this method for Bazi decode is wonderful because the intricate details are all found already written clearly in the old classic 三命通会 (scroll 2 - 论建禄). Unlike many other old texts, the conditions of other elements surrounding the day master and the interaction between the ten gods for almost were concisely described.
It is quite user-friendly, much liked the manual of assembly instructions from Ikea furniture store and if one follow the instructions of decoding, the accuracy rate can rather satisfactory.
Question: How do you determine if the "setup" is classified as 建禄格 (Jian Lu Ge)?
Answer: You can more or less confirm this setup if 2 of these conditions are fulfilled.
1) One or more element identical to the Day master is found to be permeated in Heavenly stem
2) Day master is "born" in the strongest month (Yang supports Yang, Yin supports Yin) which strengthen it. E.g. Yang Wood born in Tiger month. Yin wood born in rabbit month.
"建禄格就是日主在月上处于临官禄地又透干的就是建禄格"
In the old Chinese classic text, a rather frightening description was recorded of Jian Lu Ge:
"建禄者，其人虽财禄不聚克妻克夫，但是却多身健寿高不慕名利，多有修道出尘之志有方外之好；且兄弟众多间有大富贵者。"
(People of Jian Lu Ge are unable to accumulate vast amounts of wealth, will "cancel out" their wives and husbands (typically poor relationships with their spouses, harder to marry or many marriages). Many are physically strong, tall in height and long lifespan. They are not attracted to fame and vast wealth. Many will have thoughts of entering spiritual realm, priesthood and this is good for them. Those with many siblings have higher chances of being rich and powerful)
Do not be alarm if this "prophecy" is all loom and doom. Actually Bazi is not that direct as a form of fortune telling, in comparison the purple star astrology could be a much better method IMHO because it dived deeper into human to human relationships, which is all the rage right now.
Especially if people can't decide if apple or orange is more delightful to be eaten, wants a 3rd party to affirm it, best if they can have the green light to have both apple and orange in the mouth at the same time when they all needed is just to have a simple dose of Vitamin C.
But I digress.
Bazi is simply a 6500 years old statistical record. So I reiterated that this is a general view and will only be applicable on the pretext that THE certain birth chart is "pure" Jian Lu Ge. What is pure? Well imagine you had ordered a Sashimi salad, when the food came you realized the "salad" consisted of mostly sashimi with little or no greens. Purely sashimi.
Today the example of 建禄格 can be seen from a Singapore Actor Xie Shao Guang.

Xiao Shao Guang was a great actor. We were sad to see him leave the industry back then as he was truly in a class of his own. The TV audience loved him and his appearance in any TV series almost always guaranteed high viewership. You can see even after so many years, the paparazzi are still hot at his heels. This can be all quite annoying to a man who just simply wants to live a simple life away from the limelight, dramas and sensationalizations.
What goes through the mind of someone like Mr Xie and how does predestined destiny play a part in his journey so far?

He is a strong Yin Metal man, born in Rooster month. Another Yin Metal permeated the heavenly stem in year pillar. In this case, this birth chart can be classified as 建禄格 (Jian Lu Ge) which also means his yin metal element is very strong. Adding on to the strength of his day master is a "chopsticks" formation - 拱巳酉丑 (string of metal). This man is similar to small, exquisite metallic secret weapon liked those little Jame Bond's gadgets. Very well-crafted and powerful, but he likes to hide himself also, because secret weapon is meant to be well-hidden away.
However a metal that is too strong, can break because it is not flexible. A metal that is too weak is also not good, being too flexible it cannot function well as intended as a secret weapon. For Mr Xie, he is the former so we can see that he is the all or nothing kind of person.
建禄透七杀成格，者必须有食伤制方好。
(Jian Lu Ge with extreme power permeating at heavenly stem level, output elements e.g. action/intelligence elements are needed to counteract the extreme power element)
The heavenly stem in the month pillar is extreme power (also known as 7-killings), denoting power, status, disciplined like a military man. Indeed, he took his acting career very seriously. If a script needed him to assimilate a crippled man, he will observe a crippled man in other movies extensively, read about it and even interact with them. He sees the many layers of mankind e.g. a man's character, the aroma of a well-aged red wine, every artistic brush of a stroke which made up an oil canvas printing. Extreme power aka 7-killings has a darker texture to it, every human has a shadow side so for him, his light and his darkness are both strong and visible. That is why he can assimilate the character of a baddie very realistically too.
On the other hand:
建禄格无财官而透杀印者败。透印忌杀，透杀忌印。
(Jian Lu Ge with little/no money and proper power elements but permeated with extreme power is lost. Extreme power element is unfavorable if resources element permeated; resources element is unfavorable if extreme power element is permeated)
Basically, strong yin metal birth charts will find output elements - action and money elements favorable and input elements - resources and friends elements unfavorable. Mr Xie's luck pillar revealed that at age 42, an Earth dragon element (his resource element) appeared, which of course is unfavorable to him so his journey seems to have been set to take an unusual route.
Resource element (Earth for him) also denotes thinking pattern, so his thinking pattern is also unusual. When he was entering 42 luck pillar, his luck entered the self-reflection mode and was very overpowering. I guess this was the period which he had chosen to study Buddhism extensively. If coupled with personal setbacks, the impetus will be very strong for him to take big decisions. Indeed around 2013 which was the year of 癸巳, the unfavorable 巳酉丑 string of metal effect took place. What we saw was the big decision taken to say goodbye to samsara and be ordained as a full time monk. What is the reason behind? Metal and metal elements are related to friends. Perhaps he had met another friend who had encouraged him to enter monkhood and so he had entered monkhood to be surrounded by other monks (his friends). It is also possible that he just want to break a cycle. Remember that if metal is too strong and not flexible, it will break or want to induce a break.
Why didn't the 壬 Yang Water element take effect? One might ask. I can't help but postulated that it is due to the 丁壬 combination which had lessened the good, favorable effects of 壬(unable to counteract the 7 killings 丁) however this is likely just a combine but not convert - 合而不化. Therefore, water does not act like water, wood does not act like wood.
It can be agonizing for someone of his caliber as people find it harder to understand him and this works both ways. This "thinking symptom" will present itself strongly especially when resource luck comes in at age 42 to 52. Like most strong charts, the blanket rule is that THEY - the strong ones will not find "resource" useful and favorable. So during this luck period of 10 years, he went to seek some inner peace of his own. Then now at 54, the earth resource element luck period had passed for a while now, so the chances of him returning to normal life also materialized.
Resource and friends element are unfavorable to strong chart and 建禄格 unless there are counterbalances in place. Pertaining to resource luck, people will take a break from whatever they had been doing, go write a book, go into sabbatical, go back to school for MBA or PhD etc.
As described in the old classics, 建禄格 (Jian Lu Ge) are drawn to the spiritual side of things, soulful, introspective and thoughtful. So let's all be sensitive to people with this sort of chart. :)
